For centuries, Malaga wine has been of great importance in the region, as well as having had more than ten thousand hectares of vineyards, it cultivated vines in association with the indigenous groups to produce wines. However, it was not until 1924 that the Asociación Gremial de Criadores Exportadores applied for the registration of Marca Málaga.
The wines of the Malaga Protected Designation of Origin are mainly made with the white varieties Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel, although there are also red varieties that can be found in the P.D.O. Sierras de Málaga wines.
To celebrate this centenary, the Malaga Wine Museum, located in the Plaza de los Viñeros in an old 18th century palace, together with Carta Malacitana, some winemakers from the region and the Malaga Town Hall, have organised various activities so that wine lovers can learn about and enjoy Malaga’s wine culture.
Among various activities such as painting, music, wine pairings, tastings and conferences, there were also some unusual experiences such as a theatre show in the Historical Cemetery of San Miguel in the city of Malaga where some people were able to go back in time and learn about the history of former winemakers or important Malaga people in the world of wine who are buried in this cemetery.
The theatre group Eventos con Historia, ended the experience with a representation of the traditional treading of the grapes, while the choir Son de Málaga sang.
Moscatel de Alejandría Raisins originate from Malaga and therefore also have the P.D.O. Raisins of Malaga which protects the grapes obtained by sun-drying the ripe fruit of the Moscatel variety, harvested and dried in the Axarquia region.
Natural sun-drying is the traditional method in the area and the only one permitted by the regulations, which means that this product retains its purplish-black colour and the Muscatel flavour of the original grape, which is reinforced by an intense aroma.
So, now that you know a little more about the production and tradition of these products, we recommend you visit Malaga and discover it for yourself!
